Moving to a new city or studying abroad is not just about discovering famous landmarks and tourist attractions. It is also about finding those little places where you can feel at home, enjoy good food and experience the local lifestyle. That is exactly what I want to share with you in this new segment of the French Touch, a column dedicated to reviewing and recommending places to international students looking to discover the best of Lyon. From cosy cafés to restaurants and other local gems, the goal is to help you find welcoming spots where you can enjoy yourself, try new things and perhaps find your new favourite place.

Slake : Your next coffee break in Lyon

Located 9 Rue de l’Ancienne Préfecture in the heart of Lyon, Slake is one that deserves a place on your list. Having been there several times, I can confidently say that it is a lovely place for a coffee break, a sweet treat or simply a moment of relaxation away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

The first thing you notice is the cosy and welcoming atmosphere. The warm decor creates a comfortable setting that makes you want to sit down, take your time, and enjoy the moment. Whether you are meeting a friend, catching up on some reading, or simply, looking for a little break between classes, Slake is a great option.

Of course a coffee shop is more than just its atmosphere and Slake does not disappoint when it comes to the food. Everything I tried at Slake, from the Carrot cake to the rich, creamy hot chocolate and even the brownies, has always been excellent, making every visit a delightful experience and leaving me excited to try something new from the menu. Another major advantage is the reasonable pricing. In a city where eating out can quickly come out as expensive, finding a place that combines quality as well as affordability is always a plus, especially for students.

Slake also has a second location dedicated to brunch at 18 Rue de la Platière, offering yet another opportunity to enjoy a welcoming atmosphere and another type of décor over a more substantial meal. I think it is worth keeping in mind if you are looking for a brunch spot to try with friends at the weekend. I would personally recommend the “Egg and Bacon Muffin classic” or the “Börek d’automne” as great veggie options. You might want to make sure to book ahead, as the brunch spot tends to fill up quickly.

For international students, I think discovering places like Slake is a great way to experience everyday life in Lyon beyond the usual tourist destinations. Its relaxed atmosphere makes it an easy recommendation for anyone looking for a pleasant place to spend time, whether alone or with friends.

Stay tuned for the next recommendation, where I will be sharing another local spot worth discovering.
